Conservation Efforts for the Eurasian Curlew Face Challenges in the UK and Europe
A recent study on the Eurasian Curlew conservation efforts in the UK and Europe reveals that while some interventions show promise in improving nest success rates, others face significant challenges in boosting chick survival rates.

The Eurasian Curlew is a species in decline, primarily due to low breeding productivity. In response, numerous conservation projects have been implemented in the UK and Europe to target increases in Curlew productivity. A recent study has collated evidence from ongoing projects to assess the efficacy of these interventions and their potential to deliver population stability.
### Challenges in Conservation Efforts
The study highlights that improving chick survival rates poses a greater challenge than improving nest success rates. This is a critical area of concern, as chick survival and fledging success are essential components of demographic assessment. The study suggests that an average rate of 1.06 chicks hatched per breeding pair may be sufficient to achieve population stability, assuming average chick survival rates from hatching to fledging. However, projects in contexts where chick survival is below average will need to achieve a higher rate of chicks hatched per breeding pair than this.
### Population Modelling and Intervention Scenarios
The study employed a Leslie matrix-based population modelling approach to explore the potential of conservation interventions to deliver population stability in different scenarios. The models suggest that the required rate of chicks hatched per breeding pair could be attainable through the deployment of interventions at current intensity in landscapes of relatively high existing Curlew productivity. However, in landscapes where baseline Curlew productivity is lower, more intensive approaches may be necessary to achieve population stability.
### Barriers to Conservation Success
Key remaining barriers to realising population stability and growth in Curlew populations through conservation interventions include understanding how best to compensate landowners and land managers for the costs of implementing interventions. Natural England's proposed Wader Recovery Areas appear to offer one viable means by which to ensure that intervention effort is targeted towards areas of relatively high importance to Curlew.

### The Curlew Solutions Trial
The study reports on work conducted for Work Package 1 of the three-year Curlew Solutions Trial project. The Curlew is the UK's highest avian conservation priority, and the study highlights the importance of effective, evidence-based agri-environment schemes that can be delivered successfully in farmed, grassland-dominated landscapes. The Curlew Recovery Partnership is a collaborative initiative bringing together conservation organisations, statutory bodies, land managers, farmers, and communities to halt and reverse Curlew declines.
