Wild Otter Battle Heard on Scottish Shore

Two otters were heard and seen engaged in a fierce battle in the sea off the Isle of Mull. The encounter, described by writer Cal Flyn in a Country Diary for The Guardian, was characterized by loud, wailing cries and a physical tussle that moved from the water to the shoreline.
Flyn first heard the animals before seeing them. The sound was a high-pitched, repeated vocalization, described as a wail or an ululation. It was neither human nor feline, but something in between. Upon investigating from a cabin door, the observer initially saw only the rocky shore and seaweed.
The Sighting and the Sounds
The strange warbling call came again. It was transcribed as Ai-ai-ai-ai, a noise that was not quite a scream, howl, or trill, but a combination of all three. Then, movement appeared about 50 metres out in the water. Small, dark bodies leapt from the surf. At first, their silhouettes were confusing, reminiscent of dolphins or porpoises, but the shape was wrong.
Two small heads popped up, turned toward each other, and appeared to wrestle. Their forms were slick and dark. When one launched from the water, the observer clearly saw four limbs and a long tail, confirming the combatants were Eurasian otters. The cause of the conflict was speculated to be a fish or a crab.
A Dramatic Chase
The otters tussled and twisted together in the water. Then, one animal broke free and made a dash for the shoreline. The other shrieked and followed in pursuit. Both skimmed over the water's surface. The drama of the encounter was such, Flyn noted, that the sounds could be heard a mile away. The otters then disappeared behind a boulder, and the scene fell silent except for the waves.

The observation occurred after 8pm as the sun was setting. The wind ruffled the trees on an island in the bay. A pair of little egrets moved deliberately through the shallows.
