An international research team has identified seven previously unknown species of Madagascar's diamond frogs, genus Rhombophryne. The discovery, announced in August 2026, was made by scientists from the University of Copenhagen and other institutions using DNA from both modern and historical museum specimens. This work resolves a taxonomic puzzle that had persisted for over twelve years and raises the total number of known Rhombophryne species to 27.

"Diamond frogs have been hiding their diversity beneath our feet," said Dr. Mark D. Scherz, Curator of Herpetology at the Natural History Museum Denmark and lead author of the study. He noted that many species spend most of their lives under leaf litter and can look deceptively similar when they emerge.

Secretive Amphibians

Diamond frogs are distinctive Malagasy amphibians. Some are extremely round and resemble African rain frogs, living concealed beneath the forest floor. Others have long legs for life among moss, while some are sturdier ground-dwellers. Many appear brown initially but possess vivid hidden markings, like bright orange flashes or bold white and black patterns on their thighs and lower back. Researchers believe these may startle predators. Due to their elusive nature, they remain among the least studied vertebrates in Madagascar.

Solving a 12-Year Puzzle

The research began over twelve years ago when scientists repeatedly encountered undescribed frogs. A major challenge was matching older species names with genetic lineages from modern specimens. A breakthrough came from museomics, sequencing DNA from historical museum specimens. By comparing this genetic data with new samples, and examining external features, skeletal anatomy, and calls, the team connected historical names to correct evolutionary lineages.

"Museum collections are far more than archives of the past - they are essential scientific resources for understanding biodiversity today," said Dr. Alice Petzold of the University of Potsdam, who led the museomics work. She added that sequencing historical type specimens answered questions that had persisted for generations.

Conservation Implications

The study, a collaboration between Malagasy and European scientists, directly links biodiversity research to conservation. Many diamond frogs inhabit forests increasingly fragmented by deforestation. Basic biological knowledge for many species, such as breeding biology or population sizes, remains scarce.

"For many species, we still know almost nothing about their breeding biology, population sizes or ecological requirements," said co-author Dr. Andolalao Rakotoarison of the Institut d'Enseignement Supérieur de Soavinandriana Itasy, Madagascar. "Without that knowledge, it becomes much more difficult to assess their conservation status and protect them effectively."

The new findings are already influencing conservation planning. At a protected area workshop in March 2026, part of Madagascar's Biodiversity 30x30 Program, several newly described frogs, including Rhombophryne quentini, informed proposals to strengthen and expand protected areas. Researchers believe more unnamed species almost certainly remain undiscovered in Madagascar's forests.
